Slovenia (Easter 08)
Another long weekend, another country to conquer! This Easter break was spent with Team Gilbert (Nikki & Paul) travelling around Slovenia. On the itinerary, Ljubljana, Piran and Bled.
We started the trip in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana and our hostel was in a great location. Right in the middle of the worlds largest ghetto graffiti display and next door to a goth club. We definitely felt like we'd made some kind of wrong turn as we drove in at night. After checking in we hoofed it into town to take a look around by night and grab a quick bite to eat.

The following day we checked out the markets, castle, old town, library/museum and river before heading off to do some spelunking. Ć kocjan caves is UNESCO world heritage listed and has one of the world's largest underground chambers - completely amazing and a definite must see. It's difficult to even describe how big the chamber is - you'll just have to go see it for yourself (if you haven't already). Down the road the second cave system of Postojna contained heaps of tights'n'mights and worth a look if you've the time.

Looking for some fresh air we headed to the picturesque seaside town of Piran for our second night where we were rewarded with an amazing orange sunset over the Mediterranean. The following day we had a quick poke around the city walls before heading back North.

On the way to Bled we stopped in at Predjama castle. An amazing castle built right into an 130m high cliff. Europe was being lashed by a bit of a snowstorm at this stage so we could have had better weather for Bled but it was still a pretty sight covered in snow. We checked out the castle, strolled around the lake (with mandatory drink stops - just to keep warm of course), and took a boat out to the island to ring the wishing bell.

Much thanks to Paul for his great accommodation choices and excellent driving skillz, and also to Nik just for.... being there? =)
